Basic Skills

At Withernsea Primary School we aim to provide a positive learning environment, which reflects a whole school commitment to raising standards in Literacy and Numeracy.  We believe a sound structure of basic skills enables our pupil’s greater access to the whole curriculum and the world beyond.

At Withernsea Primary School we teach Maths through a mastery Scheme called White Rose Maths.

Mastery means acquiring a deep, long-term, secure understanding of the subject. At any one point in a pupil’s journey through school, achieving mastery is taken to mean acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable him/her move on to more advanced material.

We’re shaping assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of maths. They become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in maths but also support them across the curriculum.

The children complete various tasks during maths lessons. They will start with a varied fluency task then move onto a problem solving and reasoning activity.

Please refer to the Calculation Policy for further details on how to support your child in maths.
